Testing the Hypothesis (pt.2): Assignment 9

Who:
  • Interviewee #1 was a student that recently got her GED and currently satisfied with her full-time job at a retail store. This person doesn't have a need for a folder machine because of all the free time they have, unless they want to spend extra money to have another machine in their living space.
  • Interviewee #2 was a single mom of two and is currently working two jobs to pay the bills. Although she could use the little extra free-time she would have by using the folder machine, she states that it is currently not in her budget to buy another machine to put in her laundry room.
  • Interviewee #3 was a college student living in off-campus in an apartment. He came up with a good point that most apartments don't come with enough space to have another machine in the laundry closet. So the need of a washer and a dryer is more important than a folder machine.
  • Interviewee #4 was a well-established insurance sales man. He states that he doesn't find a need for this machine because of the fact that he is his own boss and can make time to fold his laundry to save money.
  • Interviewee #5 was a house maid that cleans houses for a living. She stated that if she encountered a house that has this machine, it wouldn't make her life easier because most of her clients likes theirs to be hanged so, there isn't much of a need for a folding machine.

What:
  • The need I identified is giving people more free time to be able to do other things in their schedule instead. This need doesn't correlate to the need of spending more time with family because if one truly wants to spend time with family or friends, they will make time.

Why:
  • The need is different for some of the outsiders. As explained by interviewee #2, she stated that having this extra help would be nice but it is also another cost that she can't afford. She would rather spend the little extra money every month going towards something for her kids.

Inside the boundaryOutside the boundary
Who is In: People who can afford this leisure
and is living a busy lifestyle
Who is Not: People who can't afford the machine,
are living a relaxed lifestyle, or don't have enough
space for another machine in their living space
What the Need Is: Creating something that can
give a person one less task
What the Need Is Not: something to make you lazier
Why the Need Exists: People don't have enough
time in their schedule to do everything that needs
to be done
Alternative Explanations: Give people more time for
themselves to increase mental health or to spend
more time with loved ones.

  1. Hey Sandra, I really enjoyed reading your interview blog. If you had not asked your targeted audience I feel like you would have lost a lot of money if you were to actually market this product and try selling it. Luckily you did not and you did several interviews to figure out if your product would be a good idea or not. I also liked how you organized your inside and outside boundaries.

  2. Your post is very precise and easy to follow, I think for the product you are trying to sell it is crucial to find the right market and the more people you interview the easier it will be to target the right group of people. Is this something that has an age group? For example, I think college students and people entering the workforce would be a good group of people as I know I am always in a rush and don't have a lot of time to do simple things like laundry as frequently as I need. On the other hand, the cost of your product would need to be scalable. Interviews are everything for your product and idea, good luck!

  3. Hello Sandra,
I enjoyed reading your post, it is well organized and clear. I also really like your product, although the customer base may be hard to determine. Many people are very busy with their everyday lives so a product such as this one would be a great need for a lot of people. However, if the price of the product is expensive the customer base might decrease.

  4. It seems of course that this machine could be used somewhere but it's important to make sure you identify the right market for your machine because most people who can afford it won't buy it maybe because it'd be easier to have a maid or simply hang their clothes up and those you can't afford it will see no need.

  5. Sandra,

This post was very thorough making it easy to understand what took place in your interviews. It seems like these interviews were really eye-opening for you as you consider moving forward with your laundry folding machine. I was impressed by your "what" because I agree that people will make time for what they want, thus it does not directly correlate. I do not imagine the having to fold laundry is the reason people do not spend more time with family. Overall, great post!

  6. Hey Sandra,

Great job with this post, I loved how easy you made it seem. It was hard interviewing five more people in depth about our products but you seemed to have an easy time with them. I think you have a great product on your hand and I for one would totally want one of these! Great job, thanks for sharing !
